During lecture students learn the most fundamental history lines in the development of Czech and world documentary film and ascertain the most fundmental examples or entire films which represent that.

Considering the nature of the course, a contextual overview of the main writers, works and their data are required. Along with participation in lectures, a knowledge of the main synthetic works of obligatory literature are required. Confirmation of knowledge will be done with a test and oral exam which will take place directly after the test and can change the results of the confirmation of knowledge /based on the test/ about one grade. If the oral exam displays a lack of knowledge in some key areas the entire testing will be repeated.

The method of these lectures originates in the same examples in the Survey of the History of World Cinema course at a more extensive level. The lecture and discussion with students are supplemented with film screenings. The agreed convention in the instruction of the History of Cinema at FAMU is that the „history“ is cosidered as up to period of the end of the 1980s. Later periods make up, in particular, the content of lectures devoted to contemporary documentary film (Petr Kubica, Documentary Dept.), or other lectures or modules.

- Assessment methods and criteria:

A final test and related oral exam. Knowledge of the historical-contextual situation, audience experience and ability to interpret the film viewed into a wider context. Without the audience experience the exam may need to be repeated.
