Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Introduction to colour grading in the context of the cinematographer’s work. Basic colour theory, representation of colours, colour mixing. Introduction to DaVinci Resolve, practical examples and tests. Basic workflow — importing original camera data and edit lists, grading and final export.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

A prerequisite for the course is a general knowledge of digital film technology and digital workflow. Elementary knowledge of colour theory is an advantage.

Course contents:

Introduction to colour grading in the context of the cinematographer’s work. Basic colour theory, representation of colours, colour mixing. Introduction to DaVinci Resolve, practical examples and tests. Basic workflow — importing original camera data and edit lists, grading and final export.

Theoretical lectures combined with immediate practical demonstrations on various sample data from a variety of sources — negative scans, RED RAW, ProRes, XDCAM etc.

4.Colour theory — basic terms. Primary and secondary colours, additive and subtractive colour mixing, colour models (RGB, YUV, HLS)

7.DaVinci Resolve user interface — Media, Edit, Color, Deliver.

8.Media — original data import, metadata, footage organising footage.

9.Edit — Timeline basics, video tracks, elementary editing tools, conforming

12.Color — Primary corrections — tools and techniques.

13.Keys, selections and power windows, animating using keyframes

Assessment methods and criteria:

100% attendance, actively taking part in classes and demonstrating all the learned colour grading techniques on sample data or on ones own exercise. The student will present the working procedure, primary and secondary colour correction and correct export settings for given deliverables.
