Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Basic language course, does not require any previous knowledge of Czech. This course is tailored to International students of various linguistic and cultural backgrounds, studying film and/or Photography at FAMU. The course takes three semesters, beginning on the level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The outcome of the course is active knowledge of A2 level (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing) and passive knowledge of B1 level.

Mode of study:

Seminar: individual, pair and team work;

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

no previous knowledge of Czech is required

Course contents:

Czech pronunciation; Greetings; Basic phrases and questions; Question words and pronouns; Questions; Negation

Verbs: The verb to be and 1st– 4th conjugation verbs in present tense, Modal verbs, Verbs to know, Repeated actions, Verbs of motion, Past tense, Conditional, Imperative, Future tense of být and imperfectives, Future tense of jít and jet, Perfectives, Prefixes při-, od- with the verbs jít, jet

Nouns: Gender of nouns, Singular and plural of nouns, Nominative and locative of places, Masculine animate and feminine nouns, adjectives and pronouns in the object position

Adjectives: Nominal phrases, Difference between adjectives and adverbs

Pronouns: Personal, Declarative, Reflexive, Possessive modifiers

Adverbs: Position and motion, other adverbs

Prepositions: Position and motion, Prepositions and cases

Word order, Position of clitics

Topics: School; Film; Photography; Shooting; Counting: Cases of Nouns, Numbers 1 – 1 000 000; Calendar, Time, Times of the day, Days of the week, Months, Seasons of the year; Weather; Orientation in the school and in the city; Shopping; Restaurant; Bank; Renting an apartment; Travelling; Public transport; Parts of the body; Health; Feelings; Likes and dislikes, Rád and its constructions;

Vocabulary for A1 – A2 levels according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; Film-related terminology; Phrases and idioms used when filming
