Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Demonstrate to students the basic macroeconomic events forming the market environment in the Czech Republic and influencing their future work. An emphasis is placed on practical applications, illustrations and presentations of economic events currently occuring with the use of daily press and other publications, examples from culture and media areas.

Mode of study:

Classic lectures, moderated discussions with students, analyses of current press information related to macroeconomics.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Basic Economics knowledge (Economy 1)

Course contents:

Macroeconomics is set-out as as science covering agregate dimensions at the state level. The main focus of economics (household, companies, government and abroad).

1) Fundamental concepts of macroeconomics, product and its measurement, the economic cycle. The current situation in the world and the Czech Republic, additional perspectives.

2. Agregate demand and supply, economic growth

3) State macroeconomic policy, fiscal and monetary tools.

4) Money and money markets

5) Unemployment as a macroeconomic category

6) Inflation: a definition, origins and costs

7) Unemployment and inflationary relationships

8) External economic balance.

Any mimeograph from VŠE (Economics high school) or other Economics college in microeconomics.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is awarded based on interest in the subject and an understanding of the basic principles of macro-economics which the student demonstrates in two forms: Joining in discussions during lectures (30%) and an oral exam (70%).
