Masterclass: Jóhann Jóhannsson

DIOD

Icelandic composer, experimental artist and creator of the Ji.hlava Festival theme song, Jóhann Jóhannsson (1969) writes electo-acoustic music, minimalism influenced by film music which has won many awards for its orginality and perception of internal rhythm of the film image. He collaborates with famous Hollywood directors as well as with independent filmmakers. He created the fantastic brass accompaniment for „The MIners' Hymn“ (2010) by Bill Morrison which was presented at the International Festival of Documentary Film Ji.hlava in 2016. During his lectures, he will speak about ways of creating film music and his own creating method.

Masterclass: Dmitrii Kalashnikov

The final full-length documentary film of the Russian director Dmitrii Kalashnikov, „The Road Movie“ presents a portrait of Russia from a singular and unusual perspective. The film is comprised of discovered dashboard camera shots by Russians. From a meditative type of film comes a frightening recording. After the screening of „The Road Movie“, Dmitrii Kalashnikov will come to discuss with the audience not just the process of his editing of this material.

Masterclass: Karpo Godina

An important presenter of Jugoslav dark film, Slovene cameraman and director, Karpo Godina (1943) began as an amateu creating short films in the second half of the 1960s. His poetics spoke to Želimir Žilnik and after winning the Golden Bear for Early works (1969), Godina collaborated with many others as a cameraman, including Lordan Zafranović and Bata Čengić. In his lecture Godina will focus on his own early works which is characterized by a spontaneous research of expression devices, refined work with film space and in the spirit of the best tradition of the Jugoslav New Wave; a continuous effort to encapture the pulse of the period.

Masterclass: Marcel Ophuls

A master of conversation, a fine observer and creator of complex documentaries Marcel Ophuls (1927) with his son, director, Max Ophuls. A Frenchman with American citizenship born in Germany hs shot most of his films for television. In his documentaries are intertwined multiple witnesses of the war events of the 20th century. His work is characterized by a sense of the moment and a sophisticated arrangement of material in which the viewer becomes morally and intellegutually involved. The documentary is considered a narrowly profiled genre and the lecture will focus on issue of what is to be a part of it and what is to remain lying on the editing floor.

Masterclass: Pierre-Olivier Bardet

French producer Pierre-Olivier Bardet (1953) is a co-founder of Ideale Audience. Among the films he has produced are those such as La Danse (2009) and National Gallery (2014) of Frederick Wiseman, Francofonia (2015) of Alexander Sokurov or this years Golden Leopard Award winner at the festival in Locarn, the documentary, Mrs. Fang (2017) of Wang Bing. As in the title of his lecture, Bardet has selected the issue which G.W.Leibniz brought up at the end of the 17th century which encaptures the dilemma of every producer. In his lecture, which he defends with examples from his work - a list of his own activity in producing the Israeli-French film Hotline (Silvina Landsmann, 2015), Bardet will ask what is, actually, production activity and what is its reason for being

Masterclass: Ada Solomon

DIOD

Romanian producer, Ada Solomon (1968), general director of HiFilm Production, collaborates with directors such as Radu Jude or Calin Peter Netzer. She has taken part in international co-productions, for example, Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade, 2016). She is a holder of the European co-production award. Her lecture is conceived as a discussion with her husband and co-worker, documentary filmmaker Alexander Solomon, creator of the films: Capitalism: Our Improved Recipe (2010) or Tarzan's Testicles (2017). The lecture will be devoted to the advantages and pitfalls aristim from using a documentary approach in the creation of feature-films. How that approach influences shooting organization and the structure of the film. What expenses are there from a budget perspective?
