Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Fundamental presentation of animation and its production. Greater introduction to the Czech market and international potential for contact and collaboration. Better preparation for school productions and then professional animation pieces from the producer's perspective.

Mode of study:

Classroom style instruction. Lectures by two instructors to be supplemented by discussions with class participants.

Course contents:

What are the particulars of animation production? How does and animation producer consider individual phases of its creation? What animation formats are and will be in the course? What is the distribution potential for animation? What animation is being made at the Animation Dept and searching for producers, screenwriters, sound engineers, editor....?

The module will be distributed over thre parts and linked to pitching of Animation Dept. student prepared projects.

In the first class we introduce the basic terminology for production of an animated piece. From technology and format through borderline use of animation as a technique. Also presented wil be production workflow wiith fundamental animation technology (drawn, computer, puppet, surface, 3D).

At the introduction of the second class will be inspiring figures in the field. Producer Peter Badač will speak about independent production combining animation and feature film and festival distribution of animatied film. Producer, Bára Příkaská (Bionaut), with examples from the series Rosa and Dara and preparations of Gourmet Bear will outline collaboration with the TV sector. Production representatives from Krutart will speak about combined contracted-advertisement pieces and production of original internet content (Škarohlídovi). Finally, Tomáš Rychecký, director of the animation studio and festival Anifilm will present further potential for the distribution of short animated films.

The third module will be closed by Anna Vášová, dramaturgist, former Czech Television program editor and long-term engagement at the Geneva EBU. She will speak about the particulars of dramaturgy for animated film and animators as creators and team collaborators. Base on her experience abroad, she will present potential for international co-production and networking for animation.

An elective part of the module will be an evening pitch by Animation Dept. students who present their prepared bachelor's and graduate films and exercises „Animation and Actor“. Pitching begins at 19:30.

Learning outcomes:

Fundamental bearing in animation creation and production. Bette acquaintance with the Czech market and international potential for co-production and contacts. Better preparedness for school productions, and consequently professional animation pieces from the producer's perspective.

Anna Vášová

Anna started as a dramaturgist at the Czech Television Center of Artistic Programming. While ther she worked on a number of key projects, ex: the Oscar-winning Kolja. Later she led the Production and Distribution Dept. at Barrandov Studios and then became a Czech Television Program Editor. From there she moved on toe the European Union Broadcaster (Eurovize) in Geneva where she supervised international co-productions of 86 national broadcasters in 56 countries. In 2009 she became the editor of Documentary and Children's Programming. Over the 15 years at Eurovize, Anna managed over 50 international co-productions, including collaboration on the innovative, worldwide documentary series „Why Democracy?“ and „Why Poverty?“. In 2013 she took over the position of member off the Czech Television General Manager's College. She now works freelance on international projects.

Ondřej Javora

Animation Dept. professional assistant, doctoral candidate in Education through Animated Film at ČVUT. He creates animated films and is an experienced in animation teamwork (Hurvinek and the Magical Museum, Frišta).

Peter Badač

FAMU Doctoral candidate, independent producer experienced in many film and television areas. Founder of the B-FILM company, which is devoted to all types of film. His filmography includes; Špína (2017), Gottland (2014) among others. He won the Panda award at Cannes (2013)

Tomáš Rychecký

In 2005 he completed master's studies at Prague FAMU, in Production. Since 1999 he has worked at Anifilm s.r.o. - from executive to creative producer. Since 2010 he has been the director of the largest Czech festival of animated film; Anifilm. He also acts in leading functions at the International Festival of Animated film - Anifest in Třebon, International Student Film Festival - Fresh Film Fest in Karlovy Vary and the International film festival Ostrava Kamera Oko.

Bára Příkaská

Producer of many short animated films, former Anifilm program director, now executive producer at Bionaut.
