Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the course is to introduce students to shooting with an 8mm camera through an economic but greatly effective documentary and experimental method capturing the atmosphere and inexhaustible charm of the moment in our living world.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Fundamentals of working with a film camera. Exposure measurements. select of B/W inverse film.

Course contents:

Theory section: Screeings of examples or short films primarily by Joas Mekas, but also Kurt Kren or Oscar Fishinger. Possibly examples from my own work. Also an introduction to the method and philosphy of spontaneous shooting.

Practical section: Each student receives the opportunity 10m of B/W film on a Super 8mm camera (approx. 2 min.) using the spontaneous film method from which will be constructed a group short film. After shooting will follow the selection of film, composition of individual parts together and then group screening.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Completion of assignment. Participation in majority of module phases in the practical (selection, editing, screening).

Lecturer CV:

Michal Böhm studied at the Bishop's High School in Brno. He did not complete English studies at Masaryk University in Brno because of transferring to FAMU. In 2003 he achieved a bachelor's degree at the Editing Dept. at FAMU with his original film Kremličkiana and his bachelor's thesis, „ The Voided Narration Phenomenon“. In 2006 he completed his master's studies with his film Horkej Den and master's thesis „The Historical Roots of Contemporary Minimalistic Film'. Currently he is studying for his doctorate at FAMU which is to be accepted with the project “Nicolas Roega Constructions".

In 2009 - 2010, he was an editor for Czech News in Czech Television Brno. From 2010 he has taken part as an editor for documentary programs for Czech Television, but also for series in collaboration with Jan Prušinovský (Trpaslík, Most!). He had his full-length feature debut as an editor for the film Nenasytná Tiffany (2015). Since then he has taken part as an editor for several student films (BoHai) and the medium-length or full length documentary (Komplex Epopeje, Budovatelé říše, Vienna calling).

Aside from film and shooting his own short original films, he also is involved in film publicity (Cinepur, A2) and teaching.
