Learning outcomes of the course unit:

1. Introduction to the fundamentals of television technology.

2. Introduction to the history of television in the world and development of televsion in the Czech Republic

3. To show the development trends and future of television as a multi-faceted, multi-media device.

Mode of study:

Instruction through lecture on individual topics accompanied by image presentations. Lecture is also supplemented by selected print materials and equipment manuals and possibly video materials.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

High school level of knowledge physics and electronics.

1. Introduction - principles o television sound and image broadcast:

- source of television signal

- interlacing

- television signal synchronization

- frequency band

2. Television signal standards

- standard television decomposition systems

- analog television signal broadcast

3. Basics of colormetrics

- human eye characteristics

- color placement in a standard MKO diagram

- fundamental principles of color television

- B/W and color signal compatibility

- PAL, SECAM, NTSC color composite systems

- system components with differing color elements

4. Recording elements for color television

- recording electronics

- semi-conductor chips: FT, IT and FIT and C-MOS

- distribution of television cameras

- television camera basic elements

- image and projection systems

5. Color recording of transparent images:

- recording with step shift

- recording with smooth shift

- tele-recording

6. Magnetic recording of image and sound:

- analog sound recording

- image recording principles

- time and management codes

- recording formats

7. Recording devices:

- analog television recording

- recording component and composite signals

- television program production technology - shooting technology

- sequencing technology

- fictional programs

- direct emission

- theatre emissions

- documentary and journalism programs

8. Television signal digitalization

- image signal digitalization principle

- fundamental concepts - sampling, quantization, coding, byte flow

- digital recording

9. Image signal compression principle

- compression systems JPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4 and JPEG 2000

- acquisition recording formats for Sony, Panasonic and JVS

10. Recording editing:

- editing equipment, linear editing

- non-linear editing

11. Television effects

- television signal processing

- effects technical principles

- directing units and their types

- processing sound in television, decibel units

- dubbing and post-synchronization

12. New trends in recording and broadcast technology

- hard disk

-optical drive

- hard memory

- HDTV

- stereoscopic television - 3D - broadcast principles

- digital foundations of broadcast

Students are introduced to the fundamentals of television technology. The path of the image and sound signal from the camera through recording to the emitter is described and manners of far-ranging broadcast is explained. As well, the technological procedures in producing a television program are covered.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Students are graded based on an oral interview. For preparation students have access to the questions. Another criterium is lecture attendance.

Decisive are knowledge and response quality.
