Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course aim is to provide a basic bearing in current legislation, terminology and principles of copyright protection with an emphasis on audiovisual pieces.

Students are acquainted wit the role of collective management and the advantages and disadvantages of the collective management model. Part of the course is also the presentation of alternative approaches to the protection of copyright which is beyond the framework of current legislation, particularly the development of electronic communications. In the practical, students are acquainted with the principles of free licence, particularly, Creative Commons. The conclusion will be devoted to discussions on issues in the relationship of audiovisual pieces in the context of collective management, free licencing and electronic media.

A Creative Commons (CC) license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work. A CC license is used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that they have created. CC provides an author flexibility (for example, they might choose to allow only non-commercial uses of their own work) and protects the people who use or redistribute an author's work from concerns of copyright infringement as long as they abide by the conditions that are specified in the license by which the author distributes the work.

Course contents:

Basics of copyright and alternative licensing models. The course introduces students to the basic concepts of intellectual rights, particularly copyright.
