Learning outcomes of the course unit:

A comprehensive overview of the production foundation of the film industry in Northern Ireland. Experience with analysis of curricular documents related to film education in schools. An overview of the situation of film education and training in Northern Ireland.

Course contents:

This module presents the results of research and professional experience of P. Bednařík from a year internship in the Northern Ireland Screen Institute. Module content is focused on the description of contexts and relationships between the film industry, which thanks to the shooting of the popular HBO series Game of Thrones has experienced a boom and a successfully developing film training segment.

The module will in detail explain the genesis of the organization of the Northern Ireland Screen Institute, its role in the British film industry, political, cultural and economic relationships with the film industry in Northern Ireland and the current situation and production foundation. Along with this there is the institutional context of the film industry supplemented with and analysis of the current situation in film training. Curricular documents will be analysed (Wider Literacy, 2003), as well as an explanation of the perspective of the Moving Image Arts subject which is the focal point of the success of the expansion of film literacy in Northern Ireland.

The module focus is appropriate for those interested in production studies, location management, film training and education, but also for all professionals who have interest in foreign experience (internship, practice, contacts).

Pavel Bednařík studied film research - philosophy at the Faculty of Philosphy, Palacky University. IN 2002 he co-founded the film club PASTICHE FILMZ, and collaborated on festivals; Academia Film Olomouc, Animated Film Review, International Documentary Film Festival, The Summer Film School of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. From 2007 to 2011 he was the artistic director of the Association of Czech Film Clubs and the Summer film school. In 2011 he was an independent lecturer, dramaturgist and project expert. Since 2018 he is the lead of the Audio-visual studio at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at the Thomas Bata University. He has been devoted to film education since 2006. From 2007 to 2009 he was part of the team for the project „Improving Competences of High School Teachers in Film, Theatre and the Media“ at the Dept. of Theatre, Film and Media Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy, Palacky University in Olomouc. Since 2007 he has been preparing and developing the project Fiilm and School for the Association of Czech Film Clubs. In 2011 he became a member of the working group for film education at the Czech Republic Ministry of Culture and has participated in the internation British Film Institute (BFI) project mapping film literacy in Europe (Screening Literacy) and is a member of the expert group FLAG (Film Literacy Advisory Group) at the European Commission. In 2015 he took part in the preparations for the Framework for Film Education), a strategic document of the European commission. For Creative Europa he has regularly prepared publications in Film/Audio-visual Education in the Czech Republic since 2014.
