Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students should have a clearer idea of the position of cult movies in the context of film history. They should also be able to form complex opinions on the divide between high culture and popular entertainment.

Course contents:

This module aims to provide space for movies made by cult directors and movies which are usually disregarded in classes focusing on the “big” history of cinema. This semester, we’ll screen 1970s works that in very unique ways reflected upon their time - the world shaped by the sexual revolution, civil rights movements, the threat of the nuclear war, and new ideas of domesticity.

The “trash” of the 70s often allowed expression of unpopular opinions and provided space for the freaks and the rebels of society. It also helped establish the notion of camp in mainstream entertainment, and together we’ll explore and scrutinize it.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Students are required to attend all screenings, and in the end choose one of the presented films and write a 2-page essay about it.
