Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the course is not only to provide a basic image of the development of visual culture from the beginning to the present and an overall total of works and style attributes, which is an expression of our collective visual memory but, as well, to give and cultivate the instruments for understanding and comprehending historical,visual artifacts, their contemporary relations and contexts. This course offers an overview of basic concepts and historical changes in visual culture, its social and technological aspects. A particular emphasis will be on the relationship of graphic arts and film.

This course requires a basic knowledge in the history of art and cultural history of Europe and a visual sensitivity required of FAMU students.

Course contents:

Winter semester:

1: The birth of the image. Birth of Architecture. Mediterranean sculpture depicting form and not depicting ornamental forms, village and nomadic culture.

2. Is God in the picture? Art and religion. Genesis of Christian art. Iconoclasm issues. Chrisitian iconography.

3. The sacred and the profane. Liturgical space. Liturgical art.

4. Visual and verbal communication. Conventionalized visual language and imaging systems. Perspective issues. Art and science.

5. The language of architecture.Tectonics and semantics. Construction and expression. Type and typology.

6. Arts and technology, art and trade. Technology of graphic arts. Art attitude issues.

7. Birth of an artist, social status of the architect and graphic artis in historical development. Teaching artists. Concept of genius. Self-portrait.

8. The artist and artistic operations. Practice on a piece, design and construction practice. Client, constructor, patron, collector, market

9. Institutionalization of art. Arts museum and arts education. Authorization and approval practice. Representation. State and national art. Art and ideology.

10. Style and style development issues. Canon and standards. Innovation in art. Progress and regress. The cult of originality, eclectism and epigonism. High and low, Rusticalization issues. Question of the classics.

11. Birth and development of historical self-awareness graphic arts. Historicism issues.

12. Artistic and scientific knowledge. Scientific research of fine arts and its influence on art. Art criticism. Issues in the popularization and education in the arts. Monument maintenance issues.

13. The fine arts and forming of visuality. Importance of pre-modern fine arts for the film arts.
