Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the course is not only to provide a basic image of the development of visual culture from the beginning to the present and an overall total of works and style attributes, which is an expression of our collective visual memory but, as well, to give and cultivate the instruments for understanding and comprehending historical,visual artifacts, their contemporary relations and contexts. This course offers an overview of basic concepts and historical changes in visual culture, its social and technological aspects. A particular emphasis will be on the relationship of graphic arts and film.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

This course requires a basic knowledge in the history of art and cultural history of Europe and a visual sensitivity required of FAMU students.

Completion of Introduction to Fine Arts 1 is recommended.

Course contents:

Summers semester:

14: Characteristics of modern civilization and modern art. Capitalism, reproduction and commodification of art, short-term exhibit institutions.

15. Modern image technology and graphic arts: photography and impressionsim. František Kupka and chrono-photography, cubism and film Zdeněk Pešánek.

16. Historical avant-garde, idea of originality and linking art and live. The new man and modernistic utopias. Totalitarian state and art.

17. The status of the artist in the modern era, the public role of the artist (political avant-garde), Marcel Duchamp. Artist-celebrity, personal mythology, death of the artist, relationship aesthetics.

18. Media specificities in modernism. Walter Benjamin, formalistic modernism.

19. Art after WWII, Primitivism and neo-avant-garde. New Realism, situationists, environments and happenings, their relation to experimental film.

20. Fluxus and the concept of intermedia. transistion among media, concept of re-mediation; What is new media? (Lev Manovic).

21. Videoart and the art of the moving image. Relation to the film tradition, expanded cinema. The main representatives and technical devices after 1990.

22. Conceptual and post-conceptual art. Genesis and definition of the concept, selected representatives, expression devices: object, text, photography, film

23. Post-modernism, concept definition. Its forms and topics in the arts.

24. Identity and gender roles in art. Context and history of feminisim and its impace on art.

25. Ascent of contemporary art, differences from modern art. Speculative reverse, repolitization, the art of collaboration, influence of modern media and the internet.
