Knowledge and understanding:

After finishing the course, the student:

•will be able to define key concepts and terms in area of budgeting

•will be able to demonstrate knowledge of key terms and strategies of fundraising

Skills and abilities:

After finishing the course, the student:

•will show improved English proficiency in all competencies (reading, speaking, reading, listening)

•will have better understanding of selected Academic English areas, e.g. the use of vague language, rephrasing and cohesion

•will have developed his/her cross-cultural communicative skills for work-related purposes

•will demonstrate ability to use selected soft skills, such as teamwork language, persuading and influencing, criticizing and praising and giving feedback

Course schedule:

Seminar 1

1.1 Budgeting: Main terms and definitions, types of budgets

1.2 Academic English: Understanding and using vague language, academic culture

1.3 Grammar Focus: Connectors, vocabulary for writing (referring backwards and forwards)

Seminar 2

2.1 Communication Skills: Emotional Intelligence, criticizing and praising someone, presenting and giving feedback

2.2 Academic English: Agreeing and disagreeing, persuading and influencing

2.3 Grammar Focus: Noun phrases review + nominalization, conditionals (review), relative clauses II

Seminar 3

3.1 Fundraising: Main terms and definitions, methods of fundraising

3.2 Academic English: Giving examples and rephrasing ideas, paraphrasing

3.3 Grammar Focus: Phrasal verbs + object, cohesion

Seminar 4

4.1 Multicultural working environment: Managing diversity, recognizing cultural differences, cross-cultural skills in management

4.2 Academic English: Language for teamwork, formal and informal verbs

4.3 Grammar Focus: Phrasal verbs without object

Hodnoticí metody a kritéria

Assessment methods and breakdown:

•Active participation in class discussions 10%

•Four take-home quizzes 40% (One quiz after each seminar, uploadable via Moodle)

•Final exam (50%):

  1. Written part: Final quiz 25% (Uploadable via Moodle during the exam period, i.e. June 2017)
  2. Oral part: Mock final exam 25% (Taken during the last seminar]

Please note that the required attendance is 70%. If you do not meet the attendance requirements, you need min. 80% to pass.

If the student cannot come to class for more than 3 continuous weeks, he/she must contact the class instructor to get the study materials and schedule an individual meeting.
