Learning outcomes of the course unit
a) Instruction links previously acquired knowledge in the technical potential of musical instruments and basic instrumentation and vocal arrangement.
b) Along with the analyses of examples from music history, students are shown the essence of individual modern musical instruments including the newest playing techniques.
c) In independent study students work on individual orchestration issues and choral arrangements. At the close students submit their extensive instrumentation of a selected solo piece for a brass quintet.
d) Student of the different studies submit 3 studies for solo instrument (composition), essay (study) focused on an issue of instrumentation of a piece in relations to music direction (Music Direction). The essay (study) is focused on the issue of the instrumentation of a piece in relation to sound (sound managment), essay (study) focused on an issue of instrumentation of piece in relation to the conductor's work for a well-known piece using brass instruments (conducting).

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Requirements for the award of credit for Instrumentation 1st Year:
Attendance: min. 75%, prior excused absences (illness, concert) are included
Completion of tasks for the semester:
Compostion study -
1 - three studies for solo instrument (always prepared in advance so the musician attending the class may have the study available at least three days before to be able to analyse the study with the artist)
2 - Instrumentation exercise - one- or two-page composition for keyboard instrumented for a brass quintet. This exercise is completed at least three weekes before the end of instruction and consultated upon in the instrumentation class with the instructor and other students (artist workshop).
Music Direction study -
1 - At least a two-page essay ( study) focused on the issue of instrumentation of a piece in relation to music direction (ex: varying approaches in recording various groups, diverse requirements for interpretation, issues of recording modern technology, etc.)
2 - Instrumentation exercise - one- or two-page keyboard composition instrumented for a brass quintet. This exercise is completed, at the latest 3 weeks for the end of instruction and consulted upon in class with the instructor and other students (artist workshop).
Conducting studies -
- At least a 2 page essay (study) focusd on issue of instrumentation of a piece in relation to the work of the conductor for a piece with significant use of brass instruments (ex: dynamic plasticity requirements, use of characteristic register of the instrument, work with instrument color, adjusting tempo by technical means of the instrument, resolving breathing inssues, etc)
- Instrumentation exercise - one- or two-page composition for keyboard instrumented for a brass quintet. This exercise is completed at least three week before the end of instruction and consulted in instrumentation class with the instructor nd other students (artist workshop).
Students of all studies have the task to ensure attendance of at least one musician on a particular instrument for a class.
Course contents
- Acquisition of knowledge of symphonic orchestra instruments - personal consultations with musicians, listening to the fundamental works of world compositions for particular instruments or their use.
- Development of music-analysis skills in relation to the orchestra in relation to student study.
- Practical instrumentation / orchestration skills through short instrumentation exercises.

Assessment methods and criteria
Credit is awarded based on demonstrated knowledge of the covered material, submission of semester assignments and fulfillment of minimum attendance.
