Learning outcomes of the course unit
Management of basic instrumentation and orchestration rules for smaller groups (chamber orchestra).
a) use of theory and practical knowledge of musical instruments in the instrumentation of a simple composition for chamber orchestra or ensemble.
b) supplementing detailed knowledge of instrument potential
c) score analysis from and instrumentation perspective + exercises.
Mode of study
group instruction, lectures - 2 hours/week
A) Practical demonstration of individual instruments of the symphonic orchestra, possible consultations with musicians, work in the studio (Composition studies)
B) Listenings and analysis of world works focusing on the given covered instruments.
C) Work on semester papers - studies, essays, instrumental practice.
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Attendance: min. 75%, prior excused absences (illness, concert) are included
Completion of tasks for the semester:
Compostion study -
3 - three studies for solo instrument (always prepared in advance so the musician attending the class may have the study available at least three days before to be able to analyse the study with the artist)
4 - Instrumentation exercise - one- or two-page composition for keyboard instrumented for a chamber (classical) orchestra or preparation of a piano excerpt of a short orchestral composition. This exercise is completed at least three weekes before the end of instruction and consultated upon in the instrumentation class with the instructor and other students (artist workshop).
Music Direction study -
1 - At least a two-page essay ( study) focused on the issue of instrumentation of a piece in relation to a piano (keyboard) piece in the instrumentation of an important composter (ex: Musorgsky/Ravel: Pictures at an Exhibition)
2 - Instrumentation exercise - one- or two-page keyboard composition instrumented for a chamber (classical) chamber orchestra or preprations for a piano exceprt from a short orchestral composition. This exercise is completed, at the latest 3 weeks for the end of instruction and consulted upon in class with the instructor and other students (artist workshop).
Students of all studies have the task to ensure attendance of at least one musician on a particular instrument for a class.

Assessment methods and criteria
The exam is graded base on the demonstrated knowledge of the covered material, submission of semester assignments and fulfillment of minimum attendance.
