Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course is for methodic practice and explanation of all oboe playing issues. It covers fingering technique, performance concepts, literature and activities with young beginning oboe players.

  1. Proper fingering technique method
  2. Explanation of peformance concepts from the methodic practice aspect.
  3. Literature for oboe divided for individual school levels and pupil potential
  4. Methodic activities with beginning pupils with varying levels of talent.
  5. Reed production methods.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Instrument skills at the corresponding level to the study year, student profile and sufficient music repertoire.

Course contents

This course prepares students for the education track at middle schools, conservatories or music schools. It also helps students understand priniciples in playing the oboe and its activities in practice. This course is methodic practice covering proper fingering techniques, performance and literature. Students are enabled to practice with students which have just begun playing the instrument. Fingering technique is demonstrated in simple etudes and a presentation is given of how to proceed in practicing or removing problems. A large part of the course is devoted to performance potential and a view of that potential and how to achieve it in various genres and periods of music properly or even possible interpretations. This is linked to a survey of the instrument literature. Methodology practice is part of the course where student guide their student which either are beginning on the oboe or have achieve various levels of playing. Reed making and adjustment is also practiced.

Various schools, etudes, phrase practice, scale etudes, recital compositions, literature for related instruments - oboe d'amore, English horn, orchestra parts for:

a) beginners

b) 2-4 year at conservatory

c) 5-6 year at conservatory

Assessment methods and criteria

Initiative and creativity of approach are assessed.
