Learning outcomes of the course unit

All issues regarding clarinet playing - fingering technique, intonation, proper breathing and interpretation are improved on more demanding etudes with and emphasis on those deficiences which have not yet been mastered. When single staccato is of a high quality, double staccato is improved.

  1. More demanding etudes for fingering and rhythmic precision - Hlavač, Zítek, Lancelot, Bozza.
  2. Double staccato is instructed using the method bz V. Mareš, which is based on the work of the tongue and the sound of the second tone using breath. If the singe staccato is good, double staccato is instructed in later courses.
  3. More imaginative recital pieces - student use their own music ideas - Saint-Saens, Stravinsky, Schumann, Suttermeister.

Mode of study

Systematic stage practice in solo creations, chamber ensembles and smaller or symphonic orchestras. Regular performance in the performance course and playback of individual instrument classes.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Instrument skills at the level corresponding to the study year and student profile.

Course contents

This course provides the students with technique, tone quality, intonation and performance skills to withstand well competition in the soloist, chamber and orchestral music fields. The course guides the future artist to independence, fulfillment of their own ideas and defense of their thoughts. This is the foundation of this course. The development of one's personality is the priority. All issues regarding playing are improved through etudes by Hlaváč, Zítek, Lancelot, Bozza, with an emphasis on those deficiencies which have not yet been mastered. If the student§s technique allows then instruction in double staccato is begun. This is the principle in which the tongue is set once for two subsequent tones. The second is executed through the airstream. Old schools used the sound „K“ to help this. At HAMU the V. Mareš method is used, where breath is used in combination with the movement of the tongue. This method has been proven in the Prague FOK symphony orchestra. If single staccato is not in order then the double is instructed in later classes. Recital pieces are those with greater imaginative content where the student must use their own ideas and imagination - Saint-Saens, Stravinsky, Schumann, Suttermeister.
