Learning outcomes of the course unit

  1. Brief review of individual aspects of play using the Prof. Jaroslav Ušák Trombone school system. Checking instrument hold, playing position, tongue placement and tone generation.
  2. Introduction to the level and demand of advanced study.
  3. Development of the overal musicality of the student in less challenging compositions.

Mode of study

On-going student participation in symphony and opera orchestra auditions.

Instrument skills at the level corresponding to study year and student profile.

Course contents

The course aim is to prepare the student over the long term for the artist track whether as a soloist, an instructor or in an orchestra. After the demanding admissions exam, it is necessary to define shortcomings and begin to work intensively on their removal. An individual course plan needs to be established and a definition of a moderate study tempo according to student abilities. For further successful development, there is a introductory review of the basic playing aspects, for example, playing position, proper instrument hold, tongue placement, mouthpiece lip pressure analysis, and primarily tone generation. This is one of the most demanding periods in study. Quick accomodation and an immediate start for quality results of the subsequent study are the main aims.

To serve these aims the time proven Jaroslav Ušák Modern Czech school of trombone is used. This may be supplemented by a selection of technique etudes: Vobaron, Kopprasch, Mueller, Bitsch. Recital literature may expand the overal musicality of the student in a number of transcriptions of Baroque sonatas (Vivaldi, Marcello, Gagliard, Caldara), through French literature (Duttileux, Bozza, Cassterde) to modern provenances (Dvořáček, Mortimer, Šulek, Matěj).

Assessment methods and criteria

Student performance is evaluated in all aspects. First, difficult passages of the composition played are demonstrated. How the student managed these is evaluated. The playing level of the student is also commented in terms of technique, intonation, sound, dynamics and performace.
