Learning outcomes of the course unit

The clarinet with its multi-faceted application requires significant player abilities and skills. This course provides the student with all skills for managing good and quality reed modification. This course covers possible reed tip modification and the influence of those modification on tone. The tip of the reed plays a decisive role in setting tone, staccato, and double staccato. There is instruction in the possible ways to modify the reed tip. Relations which affect tone are presented and practiced. The tip may be remodified by the finest sandpaper or horsetail. After cutting the reed with a cutter it is necessary to, again, modify the tip, or through cutting a miniture barrier is formed which must be removed. Sometimes merely sanding with normal grade paper and sometimes all potential tip modification need to be used. A comparison of various tip profiles from various producers gives a glimpse into the structure and natural reed vibration principles. This is the course content.

Mode of study

Playback of students from the clarinet classes with reeds they adjusted themselves.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Reed adjustments according to style specifics, high tone sound flexibilty, extreme dynamic and double-staccato.

The clarinet with its multi-faceted applications requires considerable skills and abilities. This course provides students with all abilities for managing good and quality reed modifications. This course covers the possible reed tip modifications and their influence on tone. The reed tip plays a decisive role in setting the tone, staccato and double staccato. The course also instructs possibilities of how to modify the tip. Relations which appear in the tone quality are demonstrated and practiced. The tip may also be re-modified by the softest sandpaper or horesetail. Also, after cutting down the reed with a cutter, it is necessary to re-modify the tip or in the cutting a miniature manitel may arise which must be removed. Sometimes only slightly rougher sandpaper is enough. Otherwise all other tip modifications need to be used. There is a comparison of various tip profiles from various producers giving an overview of the structure and natural principles of reed vibrations in playing. This is the course instruction content.
