Learning outcomes of the course unit

This course provides students with all practical and teaching skills required for producing or modifying clarinet reeds. This course explains reed center modification principles, which is sometimes called the heart of the reed, the influence of these modifications on tone, intonation, staccato, tone quality, dynamics, etc. The reed heart plays a decisive role in the release of tone and ease of play. It has an influence on color and, with the tip, on the setting. The possibilities of how to modify the reed heart are great. It is necessary to compare wood quality and select the most appropriate possible modification. The reed heart is very sensitive to modification and the path to modification must be considered carefully. The student is guided in the proper decsions in center modifications. The knife selection and its shape are important and for each, often, individual. Poor modifications are compared and the results of those errors are demonstrated.

Playback of students from the clarinet classes with reeds they adjusted themselves.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Reed adjustments according to style specifics, high tone sound flexibilty, extreme dynamic and double-staccato.

Course contents

This course provides the student with all the practical and methodological skills required for making or adjusting clarinet reeds. The course explains adjustment principles, the center of the reed, sometimes called the heart of the reed, and the influence of those adjustments on tone, intonation, staccato, tone qualit, setting dynamics, etc. The heart of the reed plays a decisive role in easing the tone, ease of play, influences the color with the tip in embouchure. Ways to modify the heart of the reed. It is necessary to compare, individually, wood quality and select the most appropriate modification. The heart of the reed is very sensitive to modifications and the manner needs to be considered carefully. The student is guided in the proper decision in modifying the center. The knife selection and form are important for each. Poorly selected modification are compared and the results of those mistakes .
