Learning outcomes of the course unit

To acquire a basic overview of the development of music and it particulars and main potential of notation and function in society to the ars nova period. To recognize in recorded music some pivotal periods.

Mode of study

Instructor presentation, listenting to examples.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

No requirements.

Course contents

The presentation focuses on ancient music culture to early multi-voice medieval music and selected characteristic style of ars nova.

  1. Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China
  2. Ancient Greece and Rome
  3. Music from the early Medieval to ars nova.
