Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course should provide students with a basic bearing in dance research, introduce research institutions and their resources, prepare for one's professional work. In the course students are guided in the preparation of their course paper for the exam before the dean's commission.

Mode of study

Classes, discussion, text analyses, written work, excursions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

No requirements. A good bearing in dance issues is requested.

Course contents

The course is focused primarily on the independent work of the students on partial tasks. In these they check their skills in the critical reading of literature and sources acquiring basic research experience, working procedures and habits. In the course there are excursions to selected institutions such as The Theatre Institute in Prague (documentation dept., library), National Museum in Prague (theatre dept, library, archive), The Museum of Czech Music, The Baroque Theatre in Český Krumov, etc. Other activities are an introduction to the library collections in Czech libraries, internet information sources, foreign institutions involved with dance research and documentation, international dance research associations and their activities. Part of instruction is the management of computer technology including PowerPoint presentation preparations.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit is awarded based on:

class participation

completion of assignments

work on a text study for testing before the dean's committee.

During the semester independent reading, competion of course assignments, consistent work on the written study are required. The overall grading is comprised of these items.

Conditions for successfull completion of this course: class participation, study of the literature and other resources, management of the written study in the content, formality, language and methodology aspects.
