The topic of the first semester is the Polka. In the first phase movement material related to that dance, various step variations and their combinations, types of partner holds and their changes, and use of space in groups is reviewed, The music basis for choreography etudes which the students are assigned to complete independently, is The Polka from Smetana's The Bartered Bride. Short music excerpts of 2 to 3 music motifs are used for which the students find appropriate movement material and stylization. The resulting individual concepts are compared to existing choreographies by signficant artists.
