Learning outcomes of the course unit

Continuing the study of the previous year. Setting of all knowledge and development of elements, coordination, endurance, tempo increase, more challenging support of practice and habitual learning of glisser and étender moevment groups including the basics of tourner. Strict attention to maintaining vertical and horizontal lines.

Mode of study

This course is linked to Classical Dance Technique 1 and continues the development of experience in Classical Dance Technique at the level of the 2nd study year at a Dance conservatory. This course is instructed in coordination with the concurrent methods instruction at the same level.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Linked to study in the previous year. Development of steadiness (equilibrium), outline of movement dynamics (also with consideration of increasing turn and spin instruction), strength and endurance of toes and feet, trunk and head function ensuring further development of stable support of the entire body and artistic grace.

Course contents

In this course a unique model lesson in classic dance is systematically developed - the starting point is the Vaganova method, expanded to include important influences from other systems, ex: Cecchetti and Balanchine, which is divided into exercises a la barre (at the barre), creating a larger logical set of exercises followed by exercises au millieu (center exercises - for freedom). The exercises at the barre begin predominantly with plies (recently warm-up exercises are also included), followed by battement tendu simple, battement tendu jete (degage), rond de jambe par terre, rond de jambe en l'air, battement fondu, battement frappes, adagio (practicing slow develope, such as developpe and battement relevelent and arabesque, attitude, ecarte) and grande battement. Releves and port de bras exercises are spread throughout the entire a la barre section. Au milleau usually begins with adagio, and then is followed by tendu and degage and waltz step with multiple joined elements and pirouettes. The class finishes with a series of petit allegro exercises with small quick jumps and grand allegro - large jumps. At the end, reverence, dancers bowing to the instructor and pianist. A class for women should place emphasis on pointe practice. A men's class should focus on large turning jumps and grand pirouettes.

The character, level and aim of instruction is focused on the foundations of classic dance, instruction in the fundamental basic elements, stance and posture, and of course in more demanding requirements and combinations which continue the instruction from the previous semester.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit is awarded based on:

participation in exercises and in class

completion of the semester paper

During the semester independent reading and participation in class discussions, which is a condition for sitting the exam are required. The exam is written and oral. The overall grading is comprised of 60% for class participation, 20% for the written and 20% for the oral parts of the exam.
