Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students, in this course, are acquainted with the principles of the digitalization of a sound signal, the potential for its recording and processing in DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and on studio equipment.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Completion of „Basic Electro-acoustics and Sound Techniques, Electro-acoustics.“

Course contents

  1. Sound signal, properties and characteristics, analog and digital representations
  2. Digitalization of a sound signal, PCM, Delta-sigma and SDS transfer. Oversampling, quantization noise, dithering
  3. Transference and recording of a digital signal, formats and media
  4. Direct-to-disk recording, properties and use
  5. Methods of on-line and off-line digital signal processing, plug-in modules RTAS, AudioSuite, AAX, AU, VST
  6. Digital processing of multi-channel recording, editing and mixing, other summations of multi-channel checksums with fixed and floating decimal points, digital accumulations and headroom
  7. Sound and data digital mastering, archiving data, format transfer
