Learning outcomes of the course unit

The purpose of the course is to acquaint the students with the development of electro-mechanic and electronic musical instruments, their construction, sound properties and use.

Lectures are supplemented with music samples demonstrating sound and music use of the covered instruments.

Basic knowledge of music acoustics, electronics and studies in musical instruments.

  1. The first electronic instruments - Theremin, Marten waves vlny, Trautonium, Sphärophon
  2. organs: Coupleux-Givelet, Grosstonorgel, Allen, Gulbransen
  3. Lonic organs, Philicorda, Vox, Farfisa
  4. Warbo Organ, Novachord, Ondioline, Clavioline, Tuttivox, Musitron
  5. Logan Strings, Solina Strings, Crumar, Siel
  6. Elektronic automatofony, idea of studio synthesizers (RCA, Siemens)
  7. Sound effect processors
  8. Voltage control systems (VCO, VCA, VCF, NG, LFO, EG, ...)
  9. Modular analog synthesizers (Moog, Buchla)
  10. Compact analog synthesizers (Moog, EMS, ARP, Roland, Korg, Oberheim)
  11. Hybrid synthesizers, digitalization and the entrance of MIDI
  12. Breath control, electronic drums and rhythm generators, guitar synthesizers
  13. Digital synthesizers, samplers
  14. Synthesizers with modelling methods, software use, contemporary trends in music electronics
