Learning outcomes of the course unit
Recognition of longer melodic forms (Baroque, Classical and Romanc themes).
Development of skills in analysing complex forms of 20th century music.
Gradual systematic creation of skills of relational listening, chromatic based on the given relative tone (ex: chamber „a“).
Auditory bearing in Classical-Romantic harmony systems.
Development of ability to audibly perceive a complex arranged music phrase (melody, harmony, rhythm, instrumentation, formal plan).
Mode of study
Work at the piano, primarily with the assistance of recordings, in dictation. Working with recordings enables perception of structures in original contexts and simulates music director situations in the studio.
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Natural music listening talent. Knowledge and skills from Bachelor's study.
Course contents
Longer melody dictations. Themes from Baroque and Romance literature and newer music (20th century). Working with recordings.
Expanding relative listening based on a given relative tone.
Working with recordings
Dictations, of which part is an analysis of the harmonic course of the musical phrase.
Entire process of listening analysis gradually aiming towards the most complex writing of the given excerpt including harmony, rhythm and instrumentation.
Recommended or required reading
Notation material and recordings. Examples from the music literature: Sonata, symphony and other compositions, primarilay from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century.
Assessment methods and criteria
Credit is awarded based on: results of a dictation and overall evaluation of the ability to recognize through listening a music structure.
