Learning outcomes of the course unit

A/ Synthesis of the intellectual (mathematic) and intuitive approaches in the performance of poly-rhythms, complementary rhythms and rhytmically or metrically multi-layered compositions. Sovereignty in concert and precision in separation.

B/ A basic view of the principles of music and rhythm perception in various ethnic areas.

C/ The sound culture of percussion instruments.

D/ Investigating new sound and technique potential. Improvisational skills.

Development of a relationship to new multi-percussion instruments and instruction in the techniques related to them.

Development of creativity, inventiveness, development of new sound sources.

Getting to know the wide spectrum of modern music, forms of notation, styles and experiments. Invesitgating and mastering new playing techniques.

Getting to know the standard literature for percussion and its sound analysis.

Developing the sense of sound.

Mode of study

Common classes for all students in the bachelor's study program. Predominately collective exercises supplemented by individual consultations.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

No prerequisites.

Course contents

A/ polyrhythm study, simultaneous rhythm, polymetrics and complementary rhythms, their use in improvisation. Body-rhythm expression. An intellectual approach to the conceptual interpretation of 20th and 21st century music compositions.

B/ Ethnic music study from the viewpoint of differences compared to the European approach in the perception of time and its division in music (ex. African rhythms, Gamelan)

C/ The culture of creating sound on traditional percussion instruments.

D/ Investigating new sound possibilities with percussion instruments.
