Learning outcomes of the course unit

The instruction focus lies in the study and analysis of selected compositions representing the main currents of music of the first half of the 20th century.

Mode of study

The most challenging course in composition analysis for composers and conductors. At the beginning of the semester he instructor prepares for the students several example analyses.  During the second half of the semester the students independently analyse a selected composition from the first half of the 20th century.  General attention in analysis is devoted to the techtonic composition technique used.  Part of the course work is a comparison of procedures determined in various categories of modern music and composers.  Students of interpretation specialization can choose this course as facultative.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Presumed knowledge of forms, harmony, counterpoint and instrumentation ath the conservatory graduate level and impeccably good in reading scores. Application of the knowledge simultaneously learned in Theory of Composition 3.  Students of the interpretation specializations can attend this course after they have completed their obligatory  Music Analysis 1-4.

Course contents

Instruction material originates in the assignments of individual students. Each student is required, at least once during the semester, to present a paper and participate in discussions on the papers of other students and others presented by the instructor.
