Learning outcomes of the course unit

The instruction focus lies in the study and analysis of selected compositions representing the main currents of music from the second half of the 20th century to the present.

Mode of study

The most challenging course in composition analysis for composers and conductors. At the beginning of the semester the instructor prepares for the students several example analyses. During the second half of the semester the students independently analyse a selected composition from the second half of the 20th century to the present. General attention in analysis is devoted to the techtonic composition technique used. Part of the course work is a comparison of procedures determined in various categories of modern music and composers.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

At the end of the year each student submits the course paper documenting in written form the results of the analytical work.

Prerequisite for attendance is completed course Compositions Study 3.

Course contents

The instruction material list originates in the course assignments for each student. Each student is required during the semester to present at least one paper during the semester and participate in discussions over the papers of classmates and those presented by the instructor. At the end of the year, each student submits a course paper documenting, in writing, the results of their analyses.
