Learning outcomes of the course unit

Introduction to the history of clothing as one of the basic sources of inspiration for the creation of costumes.

Curriculum: antiquity, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, clothing of barbarian nations.

Middle Ages: European clothing during the early, high and late medieval period.

Modern era: clothing of the renaissance, baroque, Rococo and stages of development in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Mode of study

Monitoring the development of basic fashion forms and textiles in relationship to the political, cultural and social development of society from ancient civilization to the 20th century. A rich visual presentation is part of instruction.

No requirements.

Course contents

Monitoring the development of basic forms of clothing and diversity of materials in the cultural-political development of civilizations of antiquity. Influences of late antiquity on the formation of the style of the early Christian world and clothing in connection with development of medieval society until its latter stage. The renaissance, the period of great political and social events bringing fundamental change to clothing in relation among other things to the economical and political development of various parts of Europe. Fashions of the Thirty Years' War and the high baroque era presented primarily through clothing of French origin as well as the Roccoco period. The incipient influence of English clothing style. Major changes caused by the French revolution and subsequent developments in the 19th century in connection with the development of industry and bourgeois society. Clothing in the 20th century presented through creative personalities of worldwide fashion with the specific features of the Czech scene, especially since 1948.
