Learning outcomes of the course unit

  1. To understand the history of theatre in relation to the focus of the Alternative and Puppet Theatre Dept.
  2. The art of reading theatre history in relation to one's theatre practice.
  3. To view the phenomenon of theatre from assorted angles, in a wide historical, cultural and societal context.

Mode of study

A combination of presentations with discussions and analyses of documents or video recordings of productions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Reading of the basic literature presented by each instructor.

Course contents

This course is to supplement general theatre history whose instruction is provided by the Theory and Critique Dept. The purpose is an extensive view of moments in the history of theatre in relation to the specific focus of Alternative and Puppet Theatre Dept.

  1. Theatre, society, audience member.
  2. Acting.
  3. Dramaturgy and relation to the text.
  4. Directing.
  5. Theatre and space.
  6. Set-design, costuming, masks.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit is awarded based on successful completion of the exam before the commission comprised of study-year instructors at the end of each semester.
