Learning outcomes of the course unit

The goal of the course is a knowledge of the fundamental types and branches of drama training from the turn of the 19th to 20th century to the present and an introduction to the oldest phases children's theatre and its various forms and functions. Another goal is the development of skills and abilities in analysing various drama training types and concepts and discover their application possibilities in students' practice.

Mode of study

Discussion, written and media recording sample analyses, screenings, student presentations based on study literature.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Instruction links into the acquired experience with various types of drama training, particularly Practical Drama Training and the framework of arranged practicals and knowledge from reviews and workshops (particularly Children's stage). The students should have a knowledge of fundamental drama training literature, education and theatre studies. A part of the work in this course is a systematic tracing the development of the field and personal procedures based on the literature and other materials.

• Jan Amos Komensky and his „education through play“.
• Enlightenment and the end of school theatre.

> Pre-Romantic and the Romantic and children's theatre:

• Hrabenka de Genlis and her „Theatre d'education“.
• Revival drama for children in The Czech lands; Matěj Jozef Sychra.

> Children's theatre as a vehicle for education and national consciousness:

• František Pravda.
• Children's performances in the Prozatím theatre and its critical acclaim.
• End of the century and fashion of stage fairy-tales.

> Drama training in the „centry of the child“:

• Reformist education and drama training.
• Henry Caldwell Cook and his „path of play“.
• The „Creative Drama of Winifred Ward - birth of modern drama training. “Playmaking" Geraldine Brian Siks.
• The personality of Miloslav Disman and his concept of drama training and the influence of his work on the rise of moder Czech Drama training.

> Drama training in the second half of the 20th century:

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit is awarded based on: class participation, completion of the course paper, presentation.

During the semester independent study of professional literature and participation in class discussions is required. A condition for the exam is the course paper.
