Learning outcomes of the course unit

1. Expand the knowledge of the field, particularly those activities in which work is done on the stage form.
2. To instill this knowledge of theatre and performance work with children and youth into a wider context of theatre and education.
3. Investigate formulate criteria for evaluating theatre and performance work with children and youth.
4. Acquire skill in evaluating children's written and verbal acting and performance.

Mode of study

Discussion, Readings, Moderated discussions, Recorded performance analyses. Review writing. Classes on instructor group reviews and workshops.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

1. A good knowledge of the didactics, theory and history of drama training.
2. Experience in leading children's and middle-school theatre ensemble or managing a drama training lesson.
3. Study of field literature.
4. Completion of „The Children's Stage“ or „Drama Education in Schools“.

Active participation in the course (including writing theatre performance reviews, preparations of individual performance) and as welll at state-wide review of children's theatre and recitation or in the semi-finals.

Course contents

This course is aimed particularly at these topics:

• Issue of aesthetic function, merits and standards,
• functions and types of critiques considering the field of theatre played by children and youth,
• genres of critiques important for the field of children's theatre and recitation,
• the task of the jury (member of the instructors committee) as a specific type of critique,
• characteristics of jury work for children's performance,
• analysis and interpretation of children's performance,
• evaluation criteria for children's performance.

In the course, work will not only be with the literature and text of the script but also with video recordings of children's performances.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit is awarded based on:

• class participation,
• completion of at least one review of a theatre performance,
• a presentation based on trade literature.

During the semester independent study of trade literature and a monitoring of trade periodicals, and participation in class discussions are required. A written and oral exam.
