Learning outcomes of the course unit

  1. Basic knowledge of the development of mass and network media (predecessors to periodical from 1450 to the beginning of the 17th century, the oldest periodicals, rise of electronic and broadcast media, rise and development of digital media).
  2. Modern media legislation in the Czech Republic.
  3. A Czech Republic current media map.
  4. Potential for the study of Czech Media history sources (NK, NM, Libri Prohibit, NTM, Czech Radio and Television Archives).

Mode of study

Presentation, moderated discussions, excursions, group anaylses.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

  1. Knowledge at a general middle school level.
  2. Ability to analyse and review.

Course contents

  1. Development of mass media from its predecessors (1450) to today.
  2. Media legislation.
  3. Excursions with presentations: The Czech Republic National Library, National Museum Library, The National Technical Museum Exhibit on the History of Print, The Libri Prohibiti Library, Czech Radio and Television Archives.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit is awarded based on:

class participation,

submission of the semester paper.

During the semester class participation and regular preparation at home (monitoring media) is required.

Requirements for successful completion of the course:

Class participation, submission of the semester paper assignment (with an oral presentation in class and written original).
