Learning outcomes of the course unit

1. Students should have, upon completion of this course, learned the basic concepts of contemporary philosophical reviews of art (aesthetic markings, aesthetic objects, aesthetic attitude, aesthetic distance, aesthetic function, standards and value) and based on this, be able to understand theory writings focused on general arts issues and those specific to theatre.
2. Students will, also, be motivated to demonstrate the presented concepts in independent critical formulation of one's theory attitudes and reasons for their support.

Mode of study

Group readings and interpretation of selected texts for selected topics supplemented by moderated discussions.

Course contents

Aesthetics will be presented as a living human discipline striving, primarily, from a philosophical tradition but linked to outcomes from other trades (linguistics, cultural anthropology, etc.).

Curriculum:

1. Presenting the conceptual plan of Prague Structuralism with an emphasis on the work of Jan Mukařovský (work with 4 to 5 key students of this artist).
2. The course further continues to phenomenological indications in Mukařovský's study presente by the concept of aesthetic experience and aesthetic distance which are fundamental to the phenomenological position of aesthetics.
3. Also looked at will be issues linked to the definition of the concept of art and ontological issues of an artistic work.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit is awarded based on class participation, which is comprised of regular attendance (max. 20% absence) and presentation of at least one of the interpreted texts for the other class students.

For the award of credit (upon fulfillment of the class participation) a course paper on an assigned topic is required.

The exam (upon fulfillment of the requirement of class participation) is a verfication of the student's familiarity with the texts which were read during the course. Students will be able, during the exam, to work with directly with a selected text but will have to demonstrate an ability to quickly manage it and knowledge of the related individual text content assertions. During an exam the student will be presented with questions focused on two selected texts.
