Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student are acquainted with the to date 20 year history of the Prague German theatre festival and the changes in its dramaturgy and dominant directing, dramatic and post-dramatic trends.

Students are also acquainted with the most significant and characteristic features of contemporary German theatre, directing and acting, in the form of the leading representatives of so called new social-criticism realism (Schaubuehne Berlin), or „regional“ or alternative theatre, searching for experimental forms of expression.

Students will have the opportunity to compare the theatre culture of several German language countries.

A perception of domestic theatre in a wider (particularly European) context is learned. Students are acquainted with the main foreign trends and significant artists.

Students acquire practice in writing current „quick“ reviews and general analytical and sythesizing speculations.

Mode of study

Attendance - short-term workshop. The dates will be directly connected to the opening of PDFNJ from 19.11. to 5.12.2016.

The workshop will take place once a week, 4 times from 14.11. to 9.12.2016.

Course content: reading of critic reviews of the previous year, mapping the to date history of the festival and changes of its dramaturgy and main directing trends, moderated discussions, analysis of viewed performances, writing short reviews and speculation, final summary.

No specific requirements.

Course contents

This course has been announced in relation to the theatre festivals (The Prague German Language Theatre Festival, Pilsen International Theatre Festival, Hradec-Kralove European Regional Theatre Festival, Theatre Nitra, etc.). During this course students will discuss performances, the history of changes in the festival over 20 years and the changes of the most significant directing and dramaturgy trends in German language theatre for the last 20 years reflected in the festival. Based on the discussions, students generate independent critique reviews and analyses.

Visits to all planned stagings, 100% attendance in instruction and other related events (ex: discussions with artists), participation in class discussion, independent paper.
