Learning outcomes of the course unit

1/ To cultivate in directing and dramaturgy students an analytical view of theatre performances and attempt to overcome artificially created barriers between future theatre artists and review critics.

2/ To guide students to independent critical thinking related not only to individual productions but to overall theatre arts.

3/ To guide students in a good bearing in modern theatre events.

Mode of study

Discussion over performances viewed, analysis of productions by domestic and foreign directors on DVD, working with critiques.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

No requirements.

Course contents

Course intention is an understanding of the purpose of critique as a part of a stage work, review necessary for the development of the theatre arts.

Curriculum

1/ Critique as the professional judgement of a work, its objectivity and subjectivity.

2/ Characteristics of a critic and skills necessary for professional judgement of a production.

3/ Relationship of the creator and the critic, common starting points and goals.

Recommended or required reading

The course has no summary work. Collections of prominent Czech theatre critics, primarily, are saved with which the students work with during the course and other theatre production critics published in Czech press.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit and the exam are awarded primarily based on participation during the entire course (including at least 80% attendance), and as the case may be, completion of a paper (and its defense in discussion).
