Learning outcomes of the course unit

1 To introduce student to issues in dramaturgy primarily from a practical perspective.

1. Acquaint students with the dramaturgy as a conceptual - creative element of a theatre piece, but also as a conceptual factor in the theatre institution in which it occurs in wider artistic, cultural and societal contexts.

Mode of study

This course covers dramaturgy as an integral element of theatre. Dramaturgy activity is not merely understood as a selection of repertoir for a particular theatre ensemble as it is usually thought of by newspaper critics or theatre journalists but rather in includes more as corresponds to the real place of dramaturgy in contemporary Czech theatre - a complex, well-thought theatre work in all its topical - significant and structural - shape contexts and forms. Study is through (aside from the presentational part), primarily reading and analysis of literary texts and discussions about them. The aim of the class is to enable theatre critics and theorists an overview of theatre from the other side, that is „from within“, from the viewpoint of theatre itself.

Course contents

1. Dramaturgy as a Conceptual - Creative Factor in Theatre. Classes of practical dramaturgy Step by step from A to Z will guide the students, in particular, in learning to read a theatre play (or other literary work) more attentively, not only from the perspective of its literary quality but rather from a dramaturgical viewpoint. They will learn to read it with regard to its particular qualities, essential for subsequent theatre application. The aim of this course is for the student to be able to identify, based on a detailed literary analysis, not only the main topic and lines of motivation offered in the usual story (literary orientation) reading which reveal the characteristics of individual figures, motivation of their behaviour or main and adjunct motivation and play topics but to be also able to recognize its specific theatre quality (or lack thereof) in orderto recognize and identify those elements contained in the text whose nature literally exacts its stage form and scene implementation.
2. This concept of working with literary - dramatic (or only literary) bases does not merely develop the students skills in scaling and identifying diverse potenital of presenting a text, but to cultivate a sense for the specific nature of theatre language inluding an awareness of the diversity of material (as opposed to literature) which theatre has at its disposition.
3. From a purely methodological point of view the course is designed at two levels. On the one hand it develops Theory and Critique Dept. student skills. It, primarily, teaches them work with drama texts and their complex important layers, and on the other hand it encourages students, in their own individually completed analysis, to defend in group disussion with other students.

Assessment methods and criteria

Grade and credit are awarded based on a minimum of 80% lecture attendance which is a condition for sitting the test. Grading is done upon the close of the lecture series with a written and oral exam.
