Learning outcomes of the course unit
The exercise is to develop the observational skill of the students, working with Camera students at the shot location, a sense of film shortcuts and personal view of the recorded events. The students are tasked, in cooperation with the Camera, Sound, Editing and Production depts, to shoot a low-budget documentary, respectively a para-documentary.
Mode of study
Presentation of instructor's experience. Analysis of subject matter and script.
In collaboration with the Camera, Sound Editing and Production Depts, the shooting of a low-budget documentary film.

Course contents
Practical exercise for all second-year bachelor students in the Film Directing Department: The exercise is designed to develop students' observational skills, working with a camera at the filming site, a sense for film abbreviation, and an individual perspective on the recorded event. In cooperation with the Cinematography, Sound, and Production Departments, students are given the assignment of filming a low-budget documentary or paradocumentary film.Group practical exercise for Directing Dept. of 2nd year bachelor students:
The exercise is to develop the observational skill of the students, working with Camera students at the shot location, a sense of film shortcuts and personal view of the recorded events. The students are tasked, in cooperation with the Camera, Sound, Editing and Production depts, to shoot a low-budget documentary, respectively a para-documentary.
Submission deadline: Screenplay by November 1, DV, DVD and Film submitted by February 15th to the Directing Dept.
Completion deadline: November, December
Recording technology: DV or Betacam
Pure footage: 10 minutes
Recording days: 5 days
Material: 5x 40' DVCAM or Betacam Digital, transfer mini DV, DVD
Sound material: 1x CD-ROM, 1x S-VHS
Sound technology: mixing table - primary recording to DV CAM or BETACAM DIGITAL
Editing: maximum 20 frequency non-linear editing, including transfer for sound post-production, 2 frequency on-line Betacam Digital
Sound Post-production: 2 frequency digital sound editing (Pro Tools), 1 frequency digital mixing facility, back transfer to DV CAm or BETACAM
Transfer: DV or BTC - S-VHS with TC 300'; BTC - VHS 30', DV-DVD, transfer of the whole study year to 1 DV+2x DVD
Archiving: DVD - FAMU video library, further according to the archiving regulations.
