The module is to serve as inspiration for one's film work and further considerations of topics and the perception of architectureas a film object, not only an architectural object.

Course contents

Through the module „Architecture in Documentary Film“, students ae introduced to filmography which captues architeture in a documentary film, creating its own specific genre, audience and distribution platform - architecture museums, galleries and architectural film festivals.

This special genre will be investigated during the module from several directions:

  1. allowing architecture as silent art in cities to tell its story
  2. how to film architecture and frame it, production know-how - approach to the location, permission, copyright and intellectual property of a building and city panorama
  3. reception of architecture film, distribution and specialized festivals.
  4. case studies - Central Bus Station, Olympic Halftime (work-in-progress), Built to Last

Schedule:

10:00-12:00 Survey of fundamental documentary films on the architecture topic - world/Czech documentary cinematography, portraits of world architects (Koolhaas, Le Courbusier, Ando, Kahn, etc.), portraits of locations and cities - with samples from selected films.

12:00-12:30 Production Know-how - location, permissions, copyright, architecture festivals

12:30-13:30 Lunch

13:30-15:30 Camera techniques. How to film and frame architecture in film. Discussion with cameraman Ondřej Belica. Case Study: documentary film Central Bus Station (2018, dir. Tomáš Elšík, camera: O. Belica) about the Tel Aviv bus station and screening of a work-in-progres film Olympic Halftime about Olympics architecture and a cross-media project Built to Last (dir. Haruna Honcoop).
