Course contents
The module introduces students to the post-colonial theory in the film environment in examples of travel films of the pair Hanelka-Zikmund , primarily in films from travels in Africa. Instruction presents a to date rarely covered perspective on the travel films of the duo Hanzelka-Zikmund with contemporary critical considerations of the ideology of those films, primarily about (post)colonial ideology which is generally in the travel film genre inherently connected.
Jiří Hanzelka (1920-2003) and Miroslav Zikmund (1919) were Czech travellers, journalists, writers and filmmakers. In 1947, Hanzelka and Zikmund began a three and half year journey around Africa and Latin America supported by Tatra Automobiles, Bat'a and the Ministry of Education. They visited 44 countries and covered 11,000 kilometers. The film material, they sent to the Zlin studio was the formed into three feature-length documentary films - Afrika I, Afrika II, From Argentina to Mexico and several short recordings (ex: African dwarves). Upon return to Czechoslovakia the films and books by the pair were widely popular among the general public and even today are legendary.
