Learning outcomes of the course unit
Introduction to cinematic wide-screen systems used. The development of screen size, a historical overview. Introduction to 3D film shooting issues.
Mode of study
Presentation of instructor knowledge, film screenings and analyses.
Prerequisites and co-requisites
A talent for the perception of the wide-screen format. Respect for the current cinemascope optical systems in relationship to various composition types.
Course contents
- The development in film screen dimensions, film strips and film shutters. A historical overview. Creative issues of the wide-screen image in general. Compatibility with the TV screen.
- Modern methods of wide-screen cinematography, a systems overview:
a) Height pane reducing systems on 35mm film.
b) Systems employing anamorphism in recording and projecting.
c) Systems horizontally shifting the film strip in recording, and with anamorphism
d) Use of film wider than the standard 35mm, and with anamorphic equipment.
e) Systems employing several concurrent film formats.
- Screening wide-screen films, audience participation principles, correct perspective, the role of Stereophonics.
- Increased screen size, distinguishing characteristics of materials, conture sharpness and it reduction. Techniscope.
- Anamorphic systems, various levels of coefficient anamorphism, the Cinemascope system, recording equipment, shooting characteristics.
- Stereoscopic film history
- Modern 3D technology principles
- A survey of 3D rigs
- The role of the stereographer
