Learning outcomes of the course unit

The lecture aim is a theory preparation for an mastery of a drama piece using television technology in the entire potential the technology offers.

Course contents

Lectures regarding drama TV supplement the TV Creations course with topics theory. This describes the concept of drama TV creations and divides it into individual types according to specifications, footage, subject or recording manner. This explains the importance of the preparations period, covers individual stages of that period; from script inspiration, directing image design and collaboration with the cameraman in creating the technical script. Similarly, this course covers the implementation period. Attention is devoted to the great potential of the post-production phase.

Part of the lectures are two excursions to Czech Television, where the students, among other, are introduced to television broadcast, TV studio operations and primarily modern HD studios KH1 and KH2 including image and sound direction. Students will have a look at studio cameras and movement technology and the largest HD portable vehicle with expert explanation. Students take part in shooting a TV program. They will have the opportunity to experience „counting“ material in Baselight and the older Da Vinci, etc.

Lecture series proposal:

  1. Introduction to instruction content of individual classes and their issues.
  2. History of TV technology and TV recording around the world
  3. History of TV technology and TV recording in the Czech Republic (with consideration of Czech Television), screening of documentary film about the beginnings of television.
  4. Visualization of a drama literature basis to a technical script, necessary close collaboration between the director and cameraman.
  5. Fundamental importance of the architect in the image effect of a piece, selection of environments, set floorplan, color, arrangement of furniture, recording possibilities, working with the floorplan in creating the technical script.

6 - 7. Considerations of recording and lighting technology: number and type of cameras, grip, movement technology possibilities and types of lamps, requirements determined by production. Collaboration with other professions which influence the image aspect quality: costuming, makeup, main lighting video technology.

  1. Excursions to Czech television: Studio, directing, camera chain, movement technology
  2. Studio recording period: work organization in recording with sequential technology, order of individual operations, required leading of entire artistic team b the director, close colaboration with the main cameraman. Managing the leading tasks of the main cameraman in a team of collaborators, strategic and sufficient diplomatic communications not only in the close team but with studio employees, actors, etc.

10 - 11. Lighting tone treatment in classic TV recording and its issues, compromises in recording from multiple directions. Individual manners of lighting in creating atmospheres with accent on acotr movement, influence of atmosphere by shooting dimensions and links to closer shots. Participation of the cameraman in post-production, effects and correction potential in TV.

  1. Final excursion to Czech TV: review of portable technology and post-production workplaces.

Assessment methods and criteria

Grading is 70% class attendance, 15% for completions of on-going tasks assigned by the instructor, 15% for the submitted theory paper.

Note

Part of instruction are excursios to Czech TV studios - during shooting of drama TV stagings and series.
