Learning outcomes of the course unit

This course is intended as an introduction to the theory and practice of lighting in film and television.

The starting point of study is a knowledge and analysis of day and non-day lighting situations with given natural sources. The presentation continues with an introduction to the characteristics of lighting devices from the perspective of their use in imitating natural and artificial sources.

Instruction is accompanied by demostrations of manners of constructing lighting in real environments and in the studio with basic objects (human face, figure).

Lighting in connection with the charaacteristics of recording media, to which, from the beginning, attention is devoted to exponometric practice.

Mode of study

Classes

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Knowledge of visual depiction culture in a historical context.

Physics, at least optics at the high-school level.

Basic experience as a cameraman, ability to manage film task.

Digital and analog cameras with all manual functions

Photometer and Spotmeter.

Course contents

Functional use of lighting in recording:

  1. Lighting as the basic technical requirement for optical depiction
  2. Lighting from the viewpoint of information about the characteristics of objects in a scene, their texture and reflective properties.
  3. LIghting as a device of artistic stylization of the optical depiction.
  4. Continuity

LIghting:

Lighting and its exposition effects are, from the camerman's perspective, evaluable in three aspects:

  1. Quality

a) Quality given its spectral composition

b) Quality given the character of the light source (points, diffusion).

  1. Direction

a) support or suppression of perception of depicted space

b) support or negation of the perception of shape and dimension of the depicted object.

  1. Intensity

a) Intensity of a single source and distance modification

b) Composition of intensity of multiple sources: main lighting, supplementary, assisting.

Exponometry:

  1. Analysis of scene lighting by measuring the lighting flux falling onto an single object.
  2. Analysis of scene lighting from the perspective of its brightness structure - point expononmetry

Source of lighting and lamps:

  1. Devices for changing the spectral composition of artificial lighting sources
  2. Devices for changing the character of lighting sources (diffusors, grids).
  3. Regulation of the nature of the beam of emitted flux - convergence vs. divergence

Basic lighting concepts:

Surface reflecting factor (reflection), exposition effect, expository lighting, light ratio

Methods of constructing lighting for a stage space

  1. Imitated primary light style
  2. Professional conventional style - diverging from strict lighing logic
  3. Activities of lighting in the service of supporting important gestures for dramatic affect including the artist applying aesthetic values and the unusual

Exercise practical (more at „Introduction to Exercise OSV 1+2“ + „portrait in a window syllabus“)

A. „face and light“ - photos b/w digital

Lighting a human face: basic concepts of lighting, framing and composing: lighting ratios. 3 point lighitng; Lighting as a dramatic device; interaction of an object and the background..

B. „portrait in a window“ - photos b/w on negative 5222

exterior/interior relationship. Focus before- /under exposed. (semi-) silhouette
