Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course aim is to provide students with information about the particular activities of a distribution organization and teach them to independently prepare a strategy and budget for distribution of a foreign and domestic film.

Mode of study

Presentation of instructor experience, moderated and unmoderated discussions, study of fundamental materials.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Successfull completion of Audiovisuals Distribution 1.

Course contents

Introduction to the particular activities of a distribution organization. Film distribution process and key decision mechanisms.

  1. The economics of distributing Audio-visuals an dividing returns and investment
  2. Returns on one's film distribution and other licensing use
  3. Estimating returns of a film
  4. Other returns connected to film distribution - public sources, marketing activity
  5. Establishing the distribution strategy and its consequences
  6. Film acquisition - price calculation, minimum guarantees, transfering licensing fees
  7. Film acquisition - organizational economic security - domestic, studio, independent
  8. Technical and production investment into film distribution, influence of digitalization
  9. Producer's marketing input
  10. Distributor's marketing input
  11. Progamming a film, influence of digitalization
  12. Internal investment of the distribution organization
  13. Film distribution approximate balance.

Assessment methods and criteria

During the semester and through a several independent tests the students' ability to estimate the potential of diverse types of films is verified. Completion of the final test made up of the development of a budget for a selected film, justification of the estimated results and establishment of the marketing and commercial strategies.
