Learning outcomes of the course unit

The aim of a masterclass and practical lecture with Yorgos Mavropsaridis is to provide an insight look into the filming process and working style of greek director Yorgos Lathimos. It is also a good opportunity of having a professional discussion, of exchanging thoughts and ideas as well as taking the advice from a famous film editor with very wide filmography.

Course contents

The last guest of Cinergy educational platform in 2017 will be the Greek film editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis, a close collaborator of Yorgos Lanthimos. Mavropsaridis edited all Lanthimose’s films, starting with director’s feature debut My Best Friend (2001), followed by psychological dramas Dogtooth (2009) and Alps (2011) and internationally acclaimed films Lobster (2015) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017). Mavropsaridis also often works with young directors – he’s edited the Latvian film Mellow Mud (2016, dir. Renãrs Vimba, Crystal Bear from Berlinale IFF), Modris (2014, dir. Juris Kursietis, Best New Director Award from Sebastian IFF), Luton (2013, dir. Michalis Konstantatos) and many other feature debuts.

Yorgos Mavropsaridis will present short excerpts from his work during the master class and talk about his collaboration with Yorgos Lathimos.

In a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.

  1. 12./ 10:00 – 16.00/ FAMU – KSS / Practical lecture with Yorgos Mavropsaridis

For a practical lesson, students will receive a film material from the upcoming (English speaking) Czech film which they have to edit by themselves in their free time. It will be one dialogue scene around a table with four characters. Edited scenes will be the material for discussion with Yorgos Mavropsaridis and for confrontation with edited scenes from their classmates.

The film material will be provided by the guarantor of this module.
