Mode of study

Students must attend a workshop or festival under the guidance of their instructor. Typically, we collaborate with thes workshops and festivals: ExOriente, Jihlava, MidPoint, Docinkubator. We recommend participation in two events.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

A month before its beginning each of the mentioned schools there is a selection of the most appropriate students by the Dept. head. In judging the student the main yardstick is primarily student artistic skill with consideration of the to date work, creativity with a view to critical review skills of film and defense.

Course contents

Educational workshop is aimed at training future film editors-25 students of Bc. and MA study programs of film editing departments of 5 European Art Universities.Lectors are major EU editors who are at the very heart of creation of important pieces of world contemporary cinema.Programme consists of practical editing exercices, screenings and analytical discussion of the student films from each university and detailed analyses of feature films of the guest editors lead by them.

The specificity of this workshop is the connection of all the institutions in Europe that offer Bc. and MA studies with the specialisation on editing in particularly: FAMU-CZ, ADU-HR, PWSFTviT-PL, VŠMU-SK, HFF-DE.

The teachers from aforementioned universities are joining the workshop for the sixth time now and they are among the most awarded editors: Jaroslaw Kaminski/PL – Ida (Oscars 2015, European Film Award 2014), Milenia Fiedler/PL – Katyn (EFA 2008, Golden Globes 2009), Szilvia Ruszev/HU – The Notebook (Crystal Globe Karlove Vary 2013), Miran Miosic/HR – Joe the King (Sundance Award 1999), Ivo Trajkov/CZ – The Great Water (Valencia Festival Award 2005), Darina Smržová – All My Children, Maroš Šlapeta/SK – Made in Ash (TOFIFEST Polsko 2013).

Practical editing exercises consist of dividing the students into 5 groups, each lead by a guest editor. They provide the footage from a short sequence of a movie they worked on, which means that the students have opportunity to explore highly professional and unique footage from the films of world importance. It gives them the chance to apply their theoretical academic knowledge onto the works of famous directors and so deepen their ability to use it as a tool of narration in film language. Thanks to the small number of participants, the process involves individual approach and discussion between the teacher and every single student.

This workshop is a considerable upgrade to the educational process at the universities involved and contributes to raising future editors, who will than be able to become a vital part of the international structure of filmmaking. Next part consists of the case studies by the guest editors, screening of the recent film he or she particpated in, followed by discussion about aspects of editing.
