Learning outcomes of the course unit

Graphic design at FAMU is perceived as a utilitarian study, which does indeed have potential. My design is a two-semester plan, based on lectures/presentations, subsequent discussion and practice assignments. In the first classes I am introduced to the students (skills, knowledge, expectations) and briefly cover the history of graphic design and typography. After, there is a presentation devoted to contemporary design in a wider context - I present the students projects, studies, graphic artists and artists speak to me most and why. After these introductory classes, I continue with practice tasks focused on student (self) presentation in a portfolio or web presentation. This requires a basic understanding of graphics software (particularly InDesign) and the potential on the web. Of course, I am not a programmer and my instruction focuses on collaboration; how to work with professional graphics artists and encoders, what to ask for and expect from these collaborations. After these classes, the students come to a deeper understanding of the application of photography in modern graphics and vice versa, editorial design and art direction. In this manner the students will comprehend that it is not necessary to be a typographer to select the proper lettering. They will know basic typography rules for creative work with lettering or fundamental polygraphic post-production, etc...

Ideally, students should, through instruction and examples, acquire an idea of the visual/graphic character of their future projects and the ability to express these ideas or create them.
